The Four Gazing Segments of Cicada (4-channel sound installation, 2010)

Does nature consist the concept of mourning? On 4th June 2008, listening the cicada’s sounding in the silent tribute of Tiananmen Square massacre gathering in Hong Kong, I supposed that I had to evade the linkage between cicada and the silent tribute of this gathering. Cicada are not mourning indeed; it is their basic instinct. However, this occasion with this sound and this silent moment becomes the deep-rooted impression and experience every year.

Based on the recording of capturing the silent moment and cicada of that night, the sound installation aims at constituting the other perspective on looking at this historical wound in China. Choosing four random point and freezing it, the work articulates the correspondance of the on-location experience of that night.
